Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)
When it comes to electric vehicles, BEVS like the all-new Kia e-Niro - the first all-electric model to be named Car of the Year - and Kia Soul promote 100% clean driving. They release zero emissions and are ideal for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint. BEVS feature more powerful motors than hybrids and, with no combustion engine on board, offer an exceptionally quiet performance. Enjoy home or fast-charging options.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
HEVs feature a full-size internal combustion engine as well as an electric motor and a battery pack. Both the engine and the electric motor can be used to drive the car individually or they can work together to enhance acceleration. The idea is to reduce combustion whenever possible. HEVs do not need to be plugged in to charge.
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
PHEVs like the Kia Niro are a plug-in alternative and usually come with a much larger battery than HEV vehicles. This allows for electric-only driving for short journeys, with the engine kicking in when necessary meaning there’s no ‘range anxiety’ attached. Stop and fill up or plug in your vehicle to maximise the hybrid eco benefits.
Types of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles Explained
Everything you need to know about hybrid, fully electric and fuel cell cars
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)A hybrid or self-charging hybrid car switches between petrol and electric automatically to optimise driving performance, improve fuel economy and lower emissions. Simply get in and the car generates power as you drive. No plugging in required.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)Plug-in Hybrid cars use a combination of petrol and electric to offer you many of the benefits of an electric car and a petrol engine combined.
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)A battery electric vehicle is better for the environment than a petrol or diesel car, cheaper to run and simpler to own. Like the sound of that? Our simple guide can tell you more.
